Alexis Krauss

The husband and wife team behind PLANT Apothecary goods are making some of our favorite organic grooming and bath products that are 100% free of petroleum, parabens, PABA, sodium lauryl sulfate, silicones and all other synthetic nasties. We were thrilled to feature PLANT Apothecary goods in our Holiday Gift Guide and we're even more excited to share this exclusive interview with founders Holly McWhorter and Bjarke Ballisager. Enjoy! PLANT Organic Bodywashes

PLANT Organic Bodywashes

1. Holly tell us about how you formulate for PLANT? What are some of your favorite organic skincare ingredients?

We create our formulas using a broad base of knowledge about natural herbs, oils, extracts and minerals that I've accumulated over years of personal study. I'm sort of obsessed with learning about the potentially therapeutic compounds different natural ingredients contain, what effects those compounds have on the skin and mindset, and how they can work together with the compounds found in other ingredients. It's incredible what studies show about the healing and age-protective qualities of pumpkin, pomegranate and sea buckthorn oils, for example. And sea buckthorn, which is one of our favorites, offers very real sun protection--as well as fatty acids that have been shown to reduce the appearance of fine lines, and even help heal burns (like sun damage) faster. Nature is such a gold mine of healing ingredients!

2. How does living in Brooklyn inspire the design and formulation of your products?

I'm not sure that living in Brooklyn has had consciously had an effect on our formulas—but we're both really inspired by the incredible ethnic diversity of Brooklyn, so it could be that that has subconsciously influenced our choice of ingredients that are traditionally used in skincare all over the world. Matcha tea and rice bran in Japan, for example, and sea buckthorn in Scandinavia and Asia... We try to pull the best ingredients from the many different natural skincare traditions around the world. As for our design, though, I can say this: There's such a huge and active design community in Brooklyn, and NYC in general, that we never hesitated to bring out a very minimal, design-conscious brand appearance in a market that, at the time (2011), wasn't nearly as saturated with that look as it is now. We felt pretty hopeful from the beginning that at least locally, there would be a positive response to our package design. And we've been very fortunate to find that to be true.

3. What is it like working as a husband and wife team?

Oh, boy! It's not always easy, especially when you're growing a company from the ground up. It's tricky to navigate differences in opinion about how the business should go while leaving your personal relationship intact. And the long hours a young business requires can easily mean being together all day every day, and not every otherwise compatible couple is compatible enough to sustain that! We're happy to say that we're doing fine, but we also look forward to the day when we're able to hire enough help that we can at least sometimes step back from doing the day-to-day logistical work together, and focus on more creative aspects of the business separately. But that said, as far as Bjarke and I in particular are concerned, his leaning toward perfectionism and my emphasis on just getting things done often end up complementing each other nicely in the finished product....after a small battle has ensued....

4. Tell us more about why you decided to collaborate with BKLYN UNLTD?

We both come from backgrounds where our parents put a big emphasis on social responsibility and community involvement, so when we started PLANT, it was always part of our mission to make products that aren't just environmentally responsible, but socially responsible as well. And years ago, when was producing the travel spice kits that are now part of PLANT's gourmet line under a different name, I had learned about the existence of nonprofit workshops for people with mental and physical disabilities. It seems only natural that if there's a component of our production that the can do, we should give it to them—it means so much, to many disabled people, to have the ability to earn money for themselves, and also just have a place to go every day and be around other people. After working with other similar workshops in the New York area, we learned about the BKLYN UNLTD from Gaia DeLoreto—the fabulous owner of the local store By Brooklyn, who carries some of our products.

5.  I love how inclusive your products are and that you market your skincare line to EVERYONE! Tell us a bit more about the "For The Skin You're In" campaign.

We came up with the “For the Skin You're In” campaign after noticing that so much of the marketing and branding surrounding organic, natural skincare is focused almost exclusively on young, slender, caucasian women. Meanwhile, of course, people of all ethnicities, ages, genders and body types deserve to know about and have access to healthy and environmentally safe products as well—without feeling like they're somehow crashing the party! So we're trying to make a point of the fact that our brand, at least, really is meant for everyone: women, men, black, white, green... and everything in between. We'd like to get a bit more age diversity into the campaign, as well as more diverse body types, so we're working on that.

6. What's next for PLANT?

We've been happy that we've started getting contacted by stores from more far-flung corners of the globe than ever, so we're expecting to expand into even more far-flung markets than we have so far. And the big news is that in mid-January of next year, our bodywashes will be launching at Target stores! They've been taking on a number of all-natural beauty brands lately, and we're super excited to be part of that. We think it's great that people in such a socially, economically and ethnically diverse audience as Target's will have easy access to safe, environmentally friendly skincare products. And other than that, we'll be adding some new products to our line in 2016—but you'll just have to wait and see what they are!

Our Guide to Non-Toxic Nails

Alexis Krauss

Here at Beauty Lies Truth we love nail polish but we're painfully aware of just how toxic some polish formulations are. While it's always healthier to opt out of polish and go for a buff instead, some polish brands are safer than others and choose to formulate without harsh chemicals like formaldehyde, dibutyl phthalate, toluene, formaldehyde resin, and camphor. Renowned nail artist Ria Lopez has compiled a list of her favorite clean polishes and we're thrilled to share them with you. Also, check out some of Ria's favorite eco-friendly NYC nail salons. Xoxo Alexis

Rethinking Tattoo Aftercare

Alexis Krauss

I had the privilege of being tattooed by Katie Shocrylas a few months back. Not only do I love my tattoo but I LOVE her. She's one of the kindest, most down to earth people I've met and she really cares about her clients and their health. As a result she's done extensive research on the best ways to quickly, safely and effectively heal tattoos. Here at Beauty Lies Truth we aren't crazy about petroleum based lotions and neither is Katie. Turns out that unlike what most tattoo shops would have you believe you don't need to heal your tattoo with Lubriderm or Aquaphor. Some of my easiest and most beautiful heals have been the result of slathering my skin with plant based oils and other natural moisturizers. Lucky for us Katie has broken down how to best heal your freshly tattooed skin using only #TRUTHBEAUTY approved products. We'd love to hear how these products work for you so make sure you tag us in your posts! Xoxo Alexis

Katie doing her thing!

Katie doing her thing!

1. What are your favorite alternative healing balms?

When it comes to tattoo aftercare I try to keep things as simple and natural as possible. I’ve experimented with many different products since I started getting tattooed years ago, and although I’m lucky to have skin that tends to heal quickly and easily, I definitely notice that using natural products yields a much smoother healing process.

When choosing an aftercare product it is important to remember that everyone's skin is different; something that works well for one skin type may not be as effective for another.

Freshly-tattooed skin needs to be able to breathe and heal the way it's naturally meant to, and any product applied to a new tattoo should simply contribute to the body’s own regeneration process. In general, conventional products tend to contain many chemically-derived ingredients that can clog pores and irritate the skin; I always look for organic, non-gmo, sustainable products that aren’t tested on animals and contain the fewest number of ingredients. Below are some of my favourites:

Anchor & Bliss Bare Bones oil moisturizer

Bare Bones.jpg

Ingredients: Grape seed oil, safflower oil, canola oil, apricot kernel oil, inca omega oil, vitamin E

Vegan and cruelty free, this one is made by a great little Australian skincare company. They also have two other oil moisturizers available (I’ve only tried the unscented version). My favourite all-around tattoo aftercare product. I love this stuff, not only for healing a tattoo, but as an everyday body moisturizer. Feels light on the skin (not too greasy at all) and moisturizes exceptionally well. A little goes a long way!

Escents Skin Repair Moisturizing Butter

escentsskinrepairbutter.jpg

Ingredients: Jojoba oil, avocado oil, grapeseed oil, cocoa butter, beeswax, shea butter, blend of 100% pure essential oils (with geranium, helichrysum & tea tree), vitamin E, carrot oil

This is my go-to product for troublesome spots that sometimes develop when healing a tattoo (especially near joints/areas that move around a lot and tend to be trickier to heal). Really intensive moisturizer - a little bit greasy, so I use it very sparingly, but it really speeds up the healing process and helps reduce scarring on any scabby spots. Great for any stubborn areas that still have a “milky” appearance after a couple of weeks.

Organic Manuka Honey Skin Cream

Ingredients: Olive oil, beeswax, grapeseed oil, manuka honey, manuka oil extract, filtered water

Organic and cruelty free, this no-frills cream is super smooth and moisturizes really well. Available at Whole Foods in Canada (there are other products with similar ingredients on the market, I just happen to use this one).

Alaffia Shea Butter Blissful Baby Balm

Ingredients: Shea butter, virgin coconut oil, sweet almond oil, beeswax, calendula

Fair trade and formulated for sensitive skin, this balm does a great job of moisturizing and protecting a fresh tattoo. Slightly more of an intensive moisturizer, this one might work best on dry skin. A little greasy when first applied, but soaks in quickly.

Redemption Organic Tattoo Lubricant & Aftercare

Ingredients: Organic castor oil, organic sunflower oil, organic beeswax, organic cocoa butter, organic coconut oil, organic vegetable glycerin, organic arrowroot powder, organic calendula oil, organic arnica, organic chamomile extract, organic rosemary extract, mixed tocopherols

I use this while I tattoo, and it also doubles as a great aftercare product. Developed specifically for tattooing, the consistency is smooth and easy to apply. A little difficult to get in Canada though, and only available through tattoo supply companies, so you might need to ask your artist.

2. Have you found some all natural ingredients are more conducive to healing than others? For example, Shea Butter, coconut oil, honey, beeswax, certain plant based essential oils, etc.

Yes! Grape seed oil makes an excellent moisturizer for healing a fresh tattoo since it is light, gentle, and easily absorbed. It contains essential fatty acids that aid in skin repair, helps to balance the skin, and has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Shea butter also moisturizes really well while allowing the skin to breathe. Calendula is used as an herbal remedy to heal wounds so it’s great for tricky heals, as it soothes the skin and helps reduce inflammation (it’s available in higher concentrations as a salve). I’m a big supporter of the antibacterial properties found in Manuka honey and tea tree oil for healing tattoos as well.

3. Have you noticed a difference in the healing process as a result of using natural moisturizers vs. conventional petrolatum/mineral oil based lotions?

My tattoos have healed considerably easier and quicker since switching from conventional moisturizers to natural products. Petrolatum/mineral oil based lotions and ointments smother the skin and introduce a variety of unnecessary and unhealthy chemicals to the body through what is essentially an open wound - this can lead to irritation of the fresh tattoo, which can cause scabbing and ink loss. This is not to say that conventional moisturizers don’t work - but based on research, science, and experience, I personally stand behind the natural healing route 100%.

4. Do you think tattoo artists will ever stop using Vaseline while tattooing?  Have you ever tried Waxelene?

Vaseline is such a traditional part of tattooing that I don’t think it will disappear from the industry any time soon. However, many artists have switched to natural alternatives, and I think the movement to do so is growing - not only for the health benefits for clients, but also for reasons pertaining to sustainability and ecological impact.

I use a mixture of Waxelene and Redemption while tattooing - personally, I find these products to be more effective and easier to work with than Vaseline.

Skin to Soul: Wolf's Eyelash Natural Perfumes

Alexis Krauss

One of the best parts about running Beauty Lies Truth is discovering new companies run by intrepid, passionate women. Jill Munson of Wolf's Eyelash is one of those women. Jill recently launched a line of four all-natural, nontoxic, plant based perfumes and we can't get enough of them. Jill is interested not just in making delicious smelling perfumes but in formulating plant-based essential oils in ways that evoke energy and emotion. She calls this connection "skin to soul" and each of her scents transcend the nose to offer uniquely therapeutic properties. My personal favorite is Wild Joy. It's both spicy and refreshing and feels like the perfect fall fragrance. Unlike synthetic fragrances, Jill's perfumes can be inhaled deeply without worrying about exposure to phthalates and other potentially irritating chemicals. We're thrilled that Jill has taken the time to share her insights on the thriving clean beauty industry and the details of her handcrafted formulations. Enjoy! Xoxo Alexis

What was the inspiration behind starting Wolf's Eyelash?

I have been making beauty products for major cosmetic companies for over 15 years and I've yet to experience a truly holistic and natural product that sincerely understands and utilizes the power of plant medicine and even more specifically its staggering influence over our emotions and our sacred soul! I started Wolf's Eyelash to bring a holistic and truly natural plant product to others that would not only make you feel beautiful, but aggress each individual on a soul level, offering people tools to help them through the struggles in life.

The name says it all. The name Wolf's Eyelash was inspired by a poem written by Clarissa Estes encouraging us to face our fears and trust ourselves so that we may truly live. The Wolf's eyelash represents a gift of inner wisdom, uncanny vision, deep internal knowing and immense compassion. To see, to hear, to know; from soul to soul

Tell us about your love for essential oils.

Essential oils capture the most powerful and fragrant part of the plant and are superb for use in natural perfume. The plant's scent is a crucial part of the healing medicine plants offer us. Working with it is a true gift. Essential oils not only smell amazing, but also have deep therapeutic properties, which make them so much more powerful than synthetic fragrance. Not to mention they are natural and safe, unlike synthetics. I also base all my fragrances in pure, organic Grape Spirits harvested in Oregon.

What are some of the therapeutic properties of your fragrances?

Understanding the basic anatomy of the human brain and how it connects to smell will get you on your way to seeing the power plant scent has over us. The basic chemistry goes like this:

The scent travels up your nose by-passing the verbal, conscious mind and directly targeting the inner mind corresponding to a primitive structure in the center of the brain, formerly called the 'olfactory brain' or the 'smell brain' and now termed the 'limbic system.' The limbic system controls emotion, behavior, memory and mood states. It is closely integrated with the olfactory pathways. So intimate that smell directly corresponds to an emotion within us.

With that in mind each of my Emotion Potion perfumes are carefully crafted with handpicked plants that are proven to have certain effects over us. It is the alchemy of the scent combined with your personal power and intentions that make these not just a perfume, but beautiful bottles of magic.

LOVE LIGHT

MANIFEST DESTINY

WILD JOY

SPIRIT FIRE

What do you wish every consumer knew about synthetic fragrances?

Most commercial products to use synthetic fragrances. Most synthetic fragrance contains phthalates, which have been shown to disrupt hormone activity, reduce sperm counts, and cause reproductive malformation, and have been linked to liver and breast cancer, diabetes, and obesity. Additionally, studies have shown a link of fetal exposure with autism, ADHD, and neurological disorders. Need I say more?

What's next for Wolf's Eyelash?

Lots of good stuff coming up, primarily in skin care and skin remedies! I have reached way back into the herbal archives, perfecting recipes as far back as the 1700s. My next launch is still under wraps, but I can tell you it has been adored by women for centuries as the ultimate wrinkle cure, was written about by Shakespeare and believed to hold the keys to wisdom and insight.

Lastly, tell us about your packaging. It's gorgeous and so unique!

Thank you! So much love goes into each product and the packaging is a huge part of it. I love art and love to paint so I wanted to be sure to include this love in my packaging. I've hand-drawn all the art on the packaging to demonstrate the intrinsic spirit of the product. And with deep love for our planet earth and everyone on it, I've made the packaging as compostable and earth friendly as possible. The outer cartons are made from 100% recycled materials and are completely compostable. The bottles are recyclable. The finishing touch-- I hand wrap each bottle with environmentally friendly, zero-waste leather.

For the Love of Essential Oils: Q&A With EO Products Founder Susan Griffin-Black

Alexis Krauss

EO stands for Essential Oils and these pure plant essences are the heart and soul of EO Products. EO Products co-founder Susan Griffin-Black is an essential oils expert and has dedicated herself to formulating products made with the safest, most effective and transformative plant oils.  The first time Jess and I tried the EO Products Organic Body Serum we knew it needed to be included in our #TRUTHBEAUTY Bags and we're thrilled that so many of you are now acquainted with this incredible company. We were eager to learn more about Susan's passion for essential oils and her commitment to nurturing such a socially responsible company. In this exclusive interview Susan educates us on EO Products' formulations and shares her thoughts on the natural beauty boom. Enjoy! Xoxo Alexis

What inspired you to start EO Products?

I started EO with my business partner Brad Black 20 years ago. I was passionate about the energy and vitality of essential oils, making wholesome and beautiful products and Brad was a great guerrilla marketer who could figure out the manufacturing process. We started EO for a few reasons; the first is we wanted to make healthy, safe products for our family and friends. Additionally, we wanted to live an integrated life and be able to be present for ourselves, kids and family – so we set up shop 7 minutes from home in San Francisco. Of course we had to make a living, so we were practical and bootstrapped it all along the way.

Tell us about your love for essential oils.

I’ve been working with essential oils for many years and they’re like my friends. We have a natural affinity and deep connection. Essential oils not only smell beautiful, they have a powerful influence on mind and body, and they enable us to appreciate the inner-connectedness of our world.

Susan Griffin-Black Co-Founder and Co-CEO of EO Products.

Susan Griffin-Black Co-Founder and Co-CEO of EO Products.

As one of the first companies to manufacture its own natural products, how has your vision for EO changed over time?

Our vision has stayed pretty constant through the years. Manufacturing in house is challenging, but we have always prioritized keeping manufacturing in house because we want full visibility into how our products are made, by whom, and with what ingredients. What has changed is appreciating the challenges of scaling a business and the purpose for doing so. Intentional growth for more impact and purpose has been our guide. We are still engaged for people, planet, purpose and profit. In addition we're a certified B Corp and have the benefit of being audited, so there are metrics to how we do and what we do.

What do you find most exciting about the world of natural beauty right now?

I love that consumers are empowering themselves with knowledge about the products they use. Natural beauty (and natural products in general) is becoming an important part of our cultural landscape. As someone who has fought for transparency in business and ingredients for 20 years, it’s rewarding and exciting to see it resonate with consumers on a wider scale. There is more self-acceptance and the idea of beauty from the inside out is slowly making its way into the mainstream. This is so important for girls and women. Integrating who you are with how you feel and look is a big deal for self-esteem and resilience.

Tell us about your experience as a female founder in the beauty industry.

I remember going to a small gathering 15 years ago with 100 people selected as the "Next Gen" by natural product industry leaders and asking, "Where are all the women business leaders?" There were many women there, however very few had started their own companies, especially in the natural beauty sector. The culture and leadership by design, not by intent, was "sensitive male." I learned and understood the financial and business side of things so it was helpful in connecting to and garnering male support and financing. There are a lot of kind, smart, compassionate and visionary men in the natural products industry.  Female angel investors at that time were almost non-existent – it was before the tech boom, etc. so it was a very different time. My closest female friends are all entrepreneurs and founded their own companies: restaurant, yoga studio, interior and clothing designer so we have been on the path together for all these years. I am so grateful for their company and support.

How is EO able to make products that are safe, effective and affordable?

We make healthy products accessible to almost everyone and believe products that are good for you don’t have to be expensive. For our EveryOne brand that we launched in late 2012, we took what we learned from our original EO line, and created simple, clean, and performance-based formulations that are less expensive and come in larger 32 oz. bottles.

Why do you think so many brands continue to formulate their products with harmful synthetic compounds?

I think most of the time it comes down to "not knowing" and not really being interested in how to do things differently. It depends who you are, what you are curious and passionate about and how you want to live.  Synthetic ingredients are much cheaper than natural ones, and they are easier to find. There’s also the consistency issue - in the case of synthetic fragrance vs. essential oils, for example, it’s much more expensive to use essential oils, and their consistency varies from year to year due to growing and weather conditions. But just because it’s easier doesn’t make it right. I foresee a big shift in this area in the coming years. Companies will start to formulate with healthier ingredients as consumers demand them.

What is the best beauty advice you have ever received?

Beauty is the presence of love, kindness, respect and knowing that we are all inner- connected. It's our natural state of being: happy and grateful and free…

Why did you start Skin & Bones?

In 2006 I met some Lakota Medicine People who introduced me to the powerful healing of essential oils.  They also taught me how our current skin care products could be causing us problems on a cellular level - hormonal, depression, eczema, acne, and more serious conditions.  During this time we were going through a death in the family and a stressful move and my skin was a mess.  I couldn’t find truly organic skin care and I also wanted something that worked for my whole family.  I was really frustrated that all of the products were saying they were face, or hand, or body,  or eye cream, but they all had the same ingredients.  I was also looking for something that smelled great on me but wasn’t feminine.  Everything for women was so girly.  So, I started making my own.

What do find most inspiring about the world of natural beauty right now?

That it may finally be taken seriously.  It is mind boggling to me that it is taking so long and people can put whatever they want in skincare and call it safe.  It is so inspiring to see people creating products that are so powerful and healthy and the community doesn’t feel competitive.  It feels more like a movement.  We are all in this together and all of the designers are so unique there is room for everyone.

Why do you think so many brands continue to formulate their products with toxic chemicals and synthetic ingredients?

I think it is for profit and because the chemists are just used to using the same ingredients.  Not sure why they came up with these ingredients in the first place or how they benefit skin.  A lot of these brands are manufactured in the same place so I imagine it is just easier.

What advice can you give to female entrepreneurs looking to make an impact in the natural beauty world?

I would tell them to trust their instincts and make products for themselves and they will find their fans.  Don’t be afraid to ask for help.  There are so many of us out there who are glad to help.  There is no way I could have done this alone.

What's next for Skin and Bones?

We want to keep the skincare line simple - not just make products to make products - however, we have so many requests for other items we are keeping an open mind.  We are really focusing on some future collaborations to open up the brand to more than just skincare.

This is the perfect summer cleanser. It's light yet surprisingly nourishing for dry skin. This hydrating mist is ideal for when your skin is feeling a bit fatigued by the sun or when your makeup needs a brightening boost. Sea Minerals promotes skin's natural ability to absorb moisture and oxygenate. USDA certified organic Patagonian seaweed extracts and Dead Sea Crystals provide a thorough therapeutic mineral treatment. Helps restore mineral balance to sun-damaged skin and reduces redness, tightness and inflammation. A quick spritz helps seal makeup against humidity. Store in fridge for a refreshing after-sun elixir.

I love body oils. They are the perfect way to moisturize skin year round. Herbivore's Jasmine Body Oil absolutely screams summer and leaves your skin feeling smooth and smelling like a magical summer night.
