When I was a teenager, I used to have oily skin. VERY oily skin. I'm talking about "Carry-around-blotting-papers-with-me-everywhere" oily skin. I tried everything to control my shine...harsh cleansers that were meant for people with "oily skin", Sea Breeze astringent (which was basically just alcohol) and scrubs & peels. I tried anything and everything to eliminate this embarrassing sheen. Through college I drank, ate crap food and did NOT get enough sleep, all things that took a horrific toll on my skin and my body. Now into my adult years...about 5 years ago I started to seriously get my act together. I started eating more meat and veggies and less processed junk, and I started running and exercising consistently. I started paying more attention to not just the food that I was eating, but also to the products that I used around my house and on my body. I started to read the ingredients on the labels. Since I had cut out processed junk from my diet, I decided to cut out anything from my skincare regimen that I couldn't pronounce.

It was by reading Liz Wolfe's "The Skintervention Guide" that I learned about the oil cleansing method. "Wash my face with oil? Are you NUTS? My skin is already oily enough! You'd have to be crazy to wash your face with oil!" So, I did it. I did it for 2 weeks straight. In the beginning, I had a few pimples here and there, but I stuck with it because I knew my face needed some time to transition. After 2 weeks, the results were AMAZING! My skin was clearer than ever, and I never had that dry, tight feeling again! I thought "this seems too good to be true!" But it wasn't.

The idea behind the oil cleansing method is that Oil Dissolves Oil.  You "wash" your face with natural, healthy oils to break up and wash away the dirty, icky oils. All of those cleansers and toners you've used in the past were simply stripping your skin of these naturally occurring oils. This is why your skin feels "squeaky clean" after you wash it. This isn't natural! Your skin NEEDS oil! This harsh cleansing technique strips your skin of necessary oils, and in an effort to re-balance itself, your skin actually produces MORE oil! And I now know that this is what led to the "oil-slick-on-my-face" look that I had been sporting since the time I was a teenager!

The great thing about this regimen is that anyone can make their own Cleansing Oil with just a few key ingredients, some of which you may already have in your pantry! All Cleansing Oils will be made up of some percentage of castor oil (naturally astringent, so it helps pull impurities from the skin) and some percentage of moisturizing oils. Those with dry skin will want to use less castor oil and more "moisturizing oils" (like olive oil, macadamia nut oil and avocado oil) while those with oily skin will want to use more castor oil and less moisturizing oils.

How to Wash Your Face with Cleansing Oil:

    1.    Pour about a quarter size pool of the oil blend into your hand and massage it into the skin on your face. This needs to be done on dry not wet your skin first. Massage for at least a minute, or until the oil has fully penetrated into your skin. Don't be afraid to rub over the eye area to remove any eye makeup you were wearing.

    2.    Run a clean washcloth under very warm water & wring it out. Place the washcloth over your face and allow it to sit there for about a minute. The warm washcloth will create a steaming action, pulling gunk and grime from your pores. Leave the wash cloth on for about a minute, or until it cools. Wipe away any excess oil that may still be on your face. Take care to wipe the edges of your face (i.e. along the hairline, chin and neck).

    3.    If after oil cleansing your skin feels dry, you may want to follow it up with a moisturizer, like our Myrrhaculous Face Cream. But chances are, your skin will feel balanced and not "tight" after oil cleansing, and no moisturizer will be needed!

Please take note that it may take your skin up to 2 weeks to adjust to this new cleansing regimen. Your skin may become more oily, and may even have a few breakouts as impurities are leaving the skin. PLEASE resist the urge to go back to your chemical-filled harsh cleansers! Stick with it...hang in there...and at the end of 2 weeks, you will be pleasantly surprised!
